FTL at International Women's Day event
Earlier this month was International Women’s Day and the week that followed I was invited to speak at a networking event sponsored by Curwens, a law firm practising in the north of London.
There were seven speakers, coming from various areas including personal training, Ocado, the dean of a law school, and me representing… being a mum.
The audience was made up solely of women and each speaker was given ten minutes to ‘display their wares’!
I have to say the dean of the law school was brilliant, as were many others. Each speaker spoke of how they had got started on their career path and how they had reached the position they were at now. Most of the speakers spoke of having to juggle work with home life, homework and all that that entails.
My talk was spoken from the heart about being the parent of a gay son and a lesbian daughter. I didn’t need notes or a flip chart or a screen with lots of pictures. I just wanted the audience to know about FTL, who we are and what we aim to achieve, which is to help parents on their journeys.
There was a goody bag for each delegate and inside I put one of our leaflets with the website details on. I said that I was sure each person present either had in their family or knew somebody who had an LGBT+ child, and I urged them to go onto the website and read some of the heartfelt stories that have been written by parents from FTL.
I felt I touched them and gave them an insight into FTL.
